Scope of Work
In Astoria Queens, NYC, a construction site at 20&30 Hallets Point is undergoing a vibrant transformation. Thanks to the collaboration between Urban Atelier Group, Graffiti Arts and Queens Mural Artist Valentino Mikalef. This project, spearheaded by UAG in partnership with The Durst Organization, aims to inject a sense of community and familiarity into the construction site. Through the creation of a large-scale canvas mural.
The Portico, as UAG calls it, is more than just a construction site—it’s a space designed to evoke feelings of home and security. Amidst the hustle and bustle of urban development. By incorporating custom murals, UAG seeks to subvert the traditional look and feel of construction sites. Instead create an environment that reflects the project’s design intent, safety requirements, and milestones.
Graffiti Arts & Queens Mural Artist Collaborate
For this ambitious project, UAG turned to Graffiti Arts. A renowned creative agency known for their expertise in street art and mural design. Collaborating with local Queens artist Valentino Mikalef, Graffiti Arts embarked on the task of creating a mural. One that would capture the essence of Hallets Point’s past, present, and future.
Mikalef’s signature collage-based style was the perfect fit for the project. Clearly allowing for a seamless integration of text, icons, map grids, and textures. The design pays homage to the site’s rich history. Featuring iconic landmarks such as the Pepsi Cola sign at Gantry Plaza State Park and the SilverCup studio signage near Queensboro Plaza. Additionally, the mural showcases the majestic Hells Gate Bridge, the East River, and the two new towers slated for completion in 2024. All set against the backdrop of an old Hallets Point map and a Greetings from Astoria signage.
But the collaboration didn’t stop at the design phase—Graffiti Arts and Mikalef also took into account the practicality of the mural’s installation. Recognizing the temporary nature of the construction site, they opted to create a triptych multi-canvas painting. The mural canvas approach not only creates an ease of transportation and installation and also allows UAG to reposition the mural in the completed towers.
Results
The significance of this project extends beyond just aesthetics. By integrating art into the construction site, UAG aims to foster a sense of pride and ownership among the workers and surrounding community. A visual reminder of progress made. Along with the collective effort required to bring the project to fruition. Moreover, the mural acts as a bridge between the past, present, and future of Hallets Point. Honoring the site’s heritage while embracing its evolution.
